My name is Karen Shaw and I am a Solutions Focused Hypnotherapist practising in the Crownhill area of the city of Plymouth.
I became interested in psychology while training to be a teacher in the 1980s and have maintained this interests all my life, doing many courses in both psychology and neuroscience for personal interest, as well as reading widely on the subject, and so training to be a Hypnotherapist was very much a natural progression. Hypnotherapy pulls together all of my interests – with the added bonus of meeting and helping many different people.
There are different types of Hypnotherapy, and I practice Solutions Focused Hypnotherapy, which is a calming and effective combination of psychotherapy (talking therapy) and hypnosis, focusing on finding solutions to help you move forward to successfully achieving your goals.
I have seen my clients manage anxiety, lift depression, reduce anger levels, climb a tower when they have been scared of heights and get on a crowded bus when they have been claustrophobic. My belief in the power of Hypnotherapy was further validated when as a student I stopped smoking when we were practising the cessation therapy on each other!
I trained with the renowned Clifton Practice and gained their Diploma for Solutions Focused Hypnotherapy. I have also been awarded the nationally accredited Hypnotherapy Practitioner’s Diploma (HPD) – the “Gold Standard” in Hypnotherapy training – from the National Council for Hypnotherapy. I am also a member of the Association for Solutions Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) which requires members to adhere to a high standard of professional conduct and abide by their code of ethics. This means I am qualified, insured, have regular supervision and attend regular training updates to make sure I stay on top of the game, so you can be assured you are getting the latest professional therapy.
I have recently completed further training in Grief, Palliative Care and Disordered Eating, and I am also a registered Practitioner of Ageing Unplugged, a programme developed by the Essex Institute to help make the most of our later years. For further details about this, click here.
I work from a private address to save on overheads which means I can offer best prices. The atmosphere is informal and relaxing, yet you will receive the same professional level of therapy as you would in a formal clinical environment.
